Crude oil and natural gas reserves make Kazakhstan an important country for the global energy market.
A quick look at a map and it becomes clear that lack of access to the sea makes pipeline systems essential for the transportation of crude oil and natural gases. KTO, the state oil transportation association in Kasachstan, equips its pipeline network (approx. 6000 km) with modern automation equipment and technology.
The aim of the project is to significantly increase the pipeline flow rate while at the same time improving the reliability of the system. The major environmental issues and the necessity for control of the entire installation (pipeline and automation equipment) require a modern and reliable communication technology over long distances.
After all, the operators must be able to identify the exact location of potential leaks quickly and assess unexpected reduction in performance.
The devices must be easy to use so operating personnel can use it after just a short training period.
Project parameters
Ethernet technology has entered into the automation field and enables communication surroundings, which are cost-effective in their implementation. As in many industrial applications, a secure transfer of data over long distances is also essential for the pipeline installations in Kazakhstan.
